Candide's internal conflict...?

I have to write an essay on two conflicting forces that plague Candide and pull him in opposing directions and explain how this internal conflict illuminates the meaning of the novel. SO, I've gotten my two conflicting forces (Pangloss' philosophy that all is for the best vs. Candide's own experiences and conclusions) and I know the themes of the novel (social oppression and injustice are always present in society, idealism vs realism and realism is more practical, religion is hypocritical, money always seems to make things worse...) BUT I don't know how the fact that Candide is pulled in two different directions clarifies these themes...which, ultimately, is my question...???
