Do I need a wired keyboard to re-install windows on an empty system?

For ease of installation then yes, definitely get one. If you don't you'll have to mess around in dos and create a boot.ini file etc. etc.. You can pick up a wired board for less than a fiver, or go down the local tip and ask if you can have a poke around their computer bit.
